FAQ

  • Why is it important for the contractor, NOT the home owner to get the permit/approval from the local town/village/city?

This is a common question we receive. It is important because its for YOUR protection. Along with following local rules and regulations to ensure installation is done correctly. The local governing bodies are making sure the contractor is properly insured with workers compensation and sufficient liability insurance to protect you! Also, selling your property in the future could be difficult if the work is not permitted.

  • Is composite decking more expensive than traditional pressure-treated lumber decking?

While the initial investment for a composite deck may be steeper due to materials and installation knowledge of the builder, you have to consider the maintenance required for a lumber deck (staining, sealing, repairs). Additionally, post-COVID lumber prices sky-rocketed, though they are leveling out a bit now. The lifetime cost of composite decking is typically less than the lifetime cost of a lumber deck.

  • Why is it important to hire a certified TrexPro or TimberTech certified partner?

As certified installers of these composite materials, Cactus Contracting ownership and crews undergo specific installation training. Additionally, randomly selected projects are inspected by our materials partners to ensure all installation is per their manual and guidelines.

As a TrexPro Platinum and TimberTech/Azek certified installer, Cactus Contracting clients that install a new or replacement deck are entitled to labor and material warranties dependent on the specific materials utilized Details available at: Trex | TimberTech

  • How do I maintain my beautiful, custom composite deck?

If possible, you should keep your deck clean from leaves and dirt by sweeping it regularly. Snow does not need to be removed, but if you are clearing a walkway, it is best to use a plastic shovel. (Avoid metal as this may damage the deck boards). For ice prevention, we recommend consulting the individual manufacturer's care package information.

We do recommend an annual cleaning with a low-pressure power washer or a soft brush with soapy water (car washing soft-bristle brushes work great!). Avoiding pile up of debris helps prevent algae or mold growth or any early damage. For brand specific cleaning and care, our partners have great website resources.

  • Is it normal to see cracks after my new concrete project is finished?

As concrete professionals we do everything in our power to prevent cracks, although cracks in concrete are of common occurrence and they develop when stresses in the concrete exceed its strength. Cracks are often caused by normal shrinkage of the concrete when hardening and drying.

  • How many inches of concrete should I have for my patio/driveway?

A 4-inch thick concrete slab can typically support a static load of about 80-100 pounds per square foot. This is suitable for residential garages and patios. 5-Inch Slab: A 5-inch thick concrete slab can support a load of around 100-125 pounds per square foot, making it suitable for driveway
